Who should take this course? Novice/intermediate sailors, ages 7 – 12 (age as of January 1, 2017). Students typically sail their own boats. Students who have completed the Introduction to Sailing class in mid June, and wish to advance should certainly consider this course. However, the OLSS has numerous highly competitive IOD’s which can be chartered for use in classes and OLYC races.
What if my child has limited sailing experience? Instructors are conscious of varied levels of experience and arrange students into groups if numbers allow, otherwise they challenge the drills and lessons to match skill levels.
What will my child learn? To start, our US Sailing Certified instructors will introduce material in a classroom setting before heading out to spend the majority of the session on the water. While on the water, sailors will receive group and one-on-one coaching to improve skills and sense of confidence on the water. As the class grows and learns together the instructors may introduce more advanced activities.
Goal: The minimum skill level for entry to this level is the ability to sail (not necessarily race) without fear in light and medium wind. The goal for these lessons is to have a positive experience in sailing as a racing skipper. Students will learn how to sail the boat themselves in all but windy conditions, and negotiate around buoys, and return to a dock. Students will be introduced to racing, and some short races will be held during classes.
What do we need to bring? Students must bring their own lunches and snacks as well as a lifejacket, change of clothes, water shoes and towel.

Lake Country Optis:
On most Fridays throughout the summer OLSS will support Opti sailors who wish to practice at Lake Country Optis.
Lake Country Optis is an event created and supported by the sailing schools in the lake country area to build the skills of our opti sailors. By brining togeather sailors and coaches of different lakes we create a unique educational experience that will further develop sailors skills, friendships and regatta readiness. More information can be found on the Lake Country Opti Flyer and webpage. The event dates and locations are also integrated into the OLSS summer 2017 calendar.
