Who should take this course? Novice/intermediate sailors, ages 8-16 (age as of January 1, 2017). Students typically sail their own boats and have arranged their own crews. However, the OLSS has two highly competitive X boats which can be chartered for use in classes and OLYC races.
What if my child has limited sailing experience? Instructors are conscious of varied levels of experience and arrange students into groups if numbers allow, otherwise they challenge the drills and lessons to match skill levels.
What will my child learn? To start, our US Sailing Certified instructors will introduce material in a classroom setting before heading out to spend the majority of the session on the water. While on the water, sailors will receive group and one-on-one coaching to improve skills and sense of confidence on the water. As the class grows and learns together the instructors may introduce more advanced activities.
Regattas: Coaches will be present at various regattas (if enough Okauchee boats attend) including the WYA, ILYA Championships, Quint, TRAP and other regattas. A great portion of the learning takes place at regattas. At some regattas, the lesson the day before the event will be held at the regatta site.
What do we need to bring? Students must bring their own lunches and snacks as well as a lifejacket, change of clothes, water shoes and towel.
Goal: The goal for This level is to learn to become a highly competitive racing skipper or crew. Skills gained will be safety, rigging, racing psychology, strategies, tactics and boat speed skills. On water experience will be stressed, therefore the advanced sailor will need to be comfortable in all racing conditions.
