Racing
Sailing isn’t just about learning the fundamentals — it’s about testing your skills on the racecourse, building confidence, and joining a tradition of competition that runs deep on Okauchee Lake.
Local Racing on Okauchee Lake
The Okauchee Lake Yacht Club (OLYC) hosts weekly races throughout the summer for a variety of fleets, including Optis, X-Boats, MC Scows, and C Scows. These races provide students and adults alike with opportunities to practice their skills, challenge themselves, and experience the excitement of friendly competition.
Youth Racing
Students from our Learn 2 Sail, Opti, and X-Boat programs are encouraged to participate in OLYC’s youth races. Coaches provide mentoring and on-the-water support to help sailors build confidence in a structured race environment.
Adult Racing
From MC Scows to C Scows, adults can join active fleets that race weekly on Okauchee Lake. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned competitor, there is a place for you.
Regattas & Off-Lake Competition
Beyond the lake, sailors can represent OLSS at regional regattas across Wisconsin and the Midwest. These events allow participants to test themselves against other sailors, experience different racing conditions, and become part of the broader sailing community.
For youth sailors, regattas are an excellent way to grow skills, build resilience, and create lasting friendships. For adults, they’re a chance to sharpen tactics and compete at a higher level.
Why Race?
Racing develops more than technical sailing ability—it builds decision-making skills, teamwork, and resilience under pressure. It’s also a fun way to connect with other sailors, celebrate progress, and enjoy the thrill of competition.
Getting Started
- Youth sailors – Ask your instructor about joining OLYC youth races or signing up for local regattas.
- Adult sailors – Reach out to OLSS or OLYC to learn about fleet options and race schedules.
- Parents & families – Come watch races from the Okauchee Lake Yacht Club and cheer on the sailors!
Racing is open to anyone willing to challenge themselves and grow. Whether you’re sailing for fun or striving to cross the finish line first, OLSS and OLYC provide opportunities for every level of sailor.
