Adult Learn 2 Sail

Sailing isn’t just for kids—adults can discover the same joy, challenge, and camaraderie on the water. The Adult Learn 2 Sail program at Okauchee Lake Sailing School is designed for beginners and those with limited sailing experience who want to build confidence, learn the fundamentals, and enjoy a rewarding new hobby.

What you’ll learn

Our experienced instructors will guide you through:

  • Sailing Basics: Understanding wind, sails, steering, and boat balance.
  • On-the-Water Skills: Rigging, launching, and safe boat handling.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Working with a crew to maneuver efficiently.
  • Introduction to Racing: For those who want to try friendly competition.

Classes combine classroom-style learning with plenty of time on the water, so participants leave with the knowledge and confidence to sail independently.

Next Steps

Graduates of the Adult Learn 2 Sail program are encouraged to continue their journey through our mentorship program and by joining the active adult racing fleets on Okauchee Lake. Whether you’re looking for a new summer activity, a family-friendly pastime, or a pathway into racing, this program is your entry point into the sailing lifestyle.

Mentorship

The Mentorship Program at Okauchee Lake Sailing School was created to help adult sailors grow their skills and confidence on the racecourse. While OLSS has always focused on youth education, in 2015 we expanded our mission to include adults who are new to racing or who already compete but want to sharpen their competitive edge.

Purpose

Our mission has always been to encourage, develop, and promote amateur sailing and yacht racing. The Mentorship Program brings that mission to life for adults by pairing experienced competitors with sailors eager to improve. It’s a chance to learn advanced skills, build confidence, and strengthen the community of adult racers on Okauchee Lake.

How It Works

Mentorship happens in two main ways:

  • One-on-One Coaching – Experienced sailors mentor understudies directly, working together on the water.
  • Group Mentoring – Coaches lead classroom-style sessions (“chalk talks”) on topics such as tuning, racing rules, and tactical decision-making.

Activities often include:

  • Boat tuning and sail trim
  • Joint sailing sessions with live feedback
  • Classroom discussions on rules, strategy, and performance
  • Critical evaluations to track progress

Program Support

Thanks to a generous benefactor, mentors receive compensation for their time, and understudies participate at no cost. In addition, understudies may earn cash awards based on their participation and results in local or regional regattas.

Community Impact

This program has created a culture of adult sailors helping each other succeed. It not only raises the level of competition but also makes it easier for new adult sailors to join the racing community with support and encouragement.

How To Get Involved

Anyone may apply to be either a mentor or an understudy. All applications are reviewed fairly under established guidelines. Whether you are eager to share your expertise or ready to learn from an experienced sailor, the mentorship program is your opportunity to grow as part of the Okauchee racing community.

Why Give?

Your donations directly give OLSS the ability to foster sailing in the community.
